The Oak Park Area Arts Council Presents “Our Nation: The Fifty States Art Quilt” at Oak Park Village Hall

The Oak Park Area Arts Council is proud to present “Our Nation: The Fifty States Art Quilt” during the months of March and April 2010 at Oak Park Village Hall, 123 Madison Street, Oak Park, IL.  Artist Pamela Penney worked with Betsy Parkinson’s 2nd grade class at Beye Elementary School to create this art quilt.

Our Nation: The Fifty States Art Quilt

Preparing their materials by dyeing fabric and yarn, then designing their individual quilt squares, they finished their pieces with some creative stitchery.  Each square artfully shows the important facts the students learned regarding the states that they have studied.

This is one project of Art Start, which brings visual and performing artists into District 97 classrooms.  Art Start is funded by the Oak Park Education Foundation, in partnership with the Oak Park Area Arts Council.  Artists share their passion for learning while conducting hands-on projects that relate to the curriculum.

Our Nation: The Fifty States Art QuiltThe Oak Park Education Foundation brings artists, architects, scientists, and technology experts in K-8th grade classrooms at every District 97 school.  Its professional partners share their passion for learning while conducting hands-on projects with more than 3,000 students each year.  OPEF’s other programs are: Global Village, Vex Robotics, Architecture Adventure, and Geared Up.  The OPEF is a privately funded, non-profit organization.

Pamela Penney is a full-time textile artist who works out of her studio/gallery at 130 Harrison Street in Oak Park where she creates, teaches and promotes fiber and textile art.  Pam has worked with the Art Start Program for many years inspiring District 97 students with stitching, felting and fabric dyeing projects.

An artists’ reception will be held on Tuesday, March 2 from 4:30-5:30 pm.
