The Oak Park Area Arts Council Announces 2009 Joseph Randall Shapiro Award Recipient

The Oak Park Area Arts Council is pleased to announce the recipient of the Joseph Randall Shapiro Award for 2009.  This year’s recipient is Wednesday Journal Inc., namely Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest and The Forest Park Review.  Wednesday Journal Inc. is being recognized for its deep and enthusiastic support of arts organizations and local artists and its unique, weekly contribution to the area’s culture in the community.

Each week, Wednesday Journal Inc creates what is simply called the Journal and the Review. Gathering hundreds of bits of local news and events, the artists at the newspapers then synthesize these bits into a wondrous print medium creation. Every week, since 1980, the newspapers report, interpret and reflect both individual and collective lives and continue to enhance the arts in our communities.

At the Arts Council’s Annual Meeting to be held on Monday, March 16, 2009 at Pleasant Home, 217 Home Avenue in Oak Park, Wednesday Journal Inc will accept the Joseph Randall Shapiro Award.  Recipients of the award receive a cast bronze sculpture, created by the late Oak Park artist Geraldine McCullough.  Past recipients of the prestigious award have been:

Oak Park Area Arts Council Announces the 2008 Fine Arts Scholarship Winners

In 1995, the Oak Park Area Arts Council convened an arts education task force.  The task force was charged with studying the state of arts education in the tri-village area of Oak Park, Forest Park and River Forest.  Former Oak Park Area Arts Council Vice President and past chair of the Oak Park & River Forest High School Alumni Association, Bill Sullivan, had the bright idea for the Arts Council to establish a fine arts scholarship program.  In 1997, the very first scholarship in the amount of $500 was awarded to Joey Nakayama, an Oak Park & River Forest High School senior, headed to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design.  Over the last eleven years, through diligence and dedication to the program, the Oak Park Area Arts Council has awarded scholarships to 78 arts involved graduating seniors, planning to major in the arts in college.  This year, the scholarship committee had the difficult job of selecting ten talented young artists.  The Arts Council is very proud to announce the following 2008 recipients.  Each of them will receive a $1,000 scholarship to assist them with their freshman year tuition and fees.
