2006 Off the Wall

2008 Summer Teen Arts Employment Program
Oak Park Area Arts Council
Application for Apprentices
16-19 years old

April 2008

Dear Applicant,

The Oak Park Area Arts Council (OPAAC) is pleased to offer Off the Wall, a summer arts employment program which is now in its fourth year.  Teen apprentices are hired by the Arts Council to take part in an intensive art training program for six weeks.  OPAAC collaborates with the Chicago Public Art Group who provides two of their core artists to lead the program.

The first three weeks are spent in the “studio” deciding on concept and design of the project for the summer.  The last three weeks are spent outside installing the mural.  This summer, work will continue and finish on part III of the mural located at Lake Street and Scoville Avenue.  The mural, “It’s About Movement,” was started in the summer of 2006.  Last year, part II was completed and titled “It’s About Movement and the Wonders that Motion Awakens.”  The medium used for the mural is bricolage, which is a combination of ceramic tiles, broken pieces of tile, mirror and found objects.  All pieces are affixed with cement and sealed with grout.  The results are spectacular!

If you are interested in having a chance to see what life is like for a professional artist while earning a paycheck, be sure to apply.  This program is for serious artists, 16-19 years old who are residents of Oak Park, Forest Park or River Forest.  It is a great part-time summer job for aspiring artists.  The work is challenging and rewarding!

The OPAAC is looking forward to another art filled summer of Off the Wall.

Sincerely,
